An Islamic landmark with a building that mimics the Prophet's Mosque
Al-Tawbah Mosque in Tabuk represents an important Islamic landmark as the site where it was built is connected to events from the Battle of Tabuk. The mosque serves as a vital point in the region, around which the markets and neighbourhoods of Tabuk are clustered.
Al-Tawbah Mosque is known by several names. Some people refer to it as the Archaeological Mosque, while the locals in the area call it the Prophet’s Mosque. It is narrated that the Prophet Muhammad - peace be upon him - prayed in the spot where the mosque was built. Researchers, on the other hand, refer to it as Al Tawbah (repentance) Mosque due to its connection to events related to the Battle of Tabuk, after which Surat Al-Tawbah (in the Holy Quran) was revealed.
Al-Tawbah Mosque was built during the reign of Caliph Omar bin Abdulaziz in 98 AH/716 AD. At first, it was an enclosed area without a roof. Over time, it received attention and was renovated multiple times. In 1393 AH/1973 AD, a significant renovation took place, which made it conform to the distinctive architectural style of the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah. The mosque can accommodate up to 3,000 worshippers.
You can visit Al-Tawbah Mosque at any time to perform prayers and reflect on the events of the Battle of Tabuk that took place on this land, in an atmosphere of tranquillity surrounded by a building that imitates the Prophet’s Mosque. In close proximity, you will find Tabuk Castle, which was built over 5,000 years ago, as well as the markets of Tabuk, now known as Al-Jaddah, which has been an important economic destination for the people of Tabuk since ancient times.
