A sacred well where the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) drank and performed Wudu.
The Well of Ghars is a historic well in Al Madinah, closely tied to Prophet Muhammad’s (Peace be upon him) life and legacy. Located in Al-Aaliyah District, about 3 kilometers south of the Prophet’s Mosque, this well was known for its pure, fresh water, which the Prophet (Peace be upon him) preferred for drinking and Wudu. It is also narrated that he instructed Ali ibn Abi Talib (RA) to wash his body with seven buckets of its water after his passing.
Dating back to pre-Islamic times, The Well of Ghars was originally owned by Malik ibn Al-Nahhat, the ancestor of Sa’d ibn Khaythama (RA), who hosted the Prophet (peace be upon him) when he arrived in Quba during the Hijrah. The well, lined with black basalt stones, has a circular shape, with a diameter of 3.3 meters and a depth of 11 meters. Throughout history, it has undergone several renovations, including during the Saudi era, where it was restored, cleaned, and fitted with drinking facilities for visitors. Today, The Well of Ghars stands as a landmark of faith, history, and heritage, offering visitors a glimpse into the Prophetic era.
