Did you know that Al Foqair Well is where the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, planted palm trees with his own hands?
Located 3.2 km southeast of the Prophet’s Mosque, Al Foqair Well—also known as Salman Al-Farsi’s Well—is a historic site deeply rooted in Islamic history. Dating back to pre-Islamic times, it was originally part of Banu Qurayza’s lands in Al-Awali. The name "Al Foqair" comes from the Arabic word meaning "digging the ground for planting palm saplings," a reflection of the remarkable event that took place here.
This well is linked to Salman Al-Farsi, the Persian companion of the Prophet Muhammad, who was enslaved in Al Madinah. Peace be upon him. After accepting Islam, his Jewish owner demanded 40 ounces of gold and the planting of 300 palm trees for his freedom. The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, and his companions took part in planting the trees, and by divine blessing, all of them bore fruit within a year, granting Salman Al-Farsi his freedom.
Over the centuries, Al Foqair Well was preserved and maintained. In the Saudi era, it was restored, its water extracted, and the surrounding area redeveloped to accommodate visitors. Today, it stands as a cultural and historical landmark, narrating one of the most inspiring stories of faith and perseverance from the Prophetic era.
