Built for speed
Even in the octane-fueled world of Formula One racing, known for its powerfully muscled hot rods, the Jeddah Corniche Circuit is breaking speed records.
The track, situated along Saudi’s Red Sea coastline, is “the fastest street circuit ever seen in Formula One,” according to the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile, the governing body for motorsports. It also boasts the most corners: 27.
The circuit hosted the first Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in 2021, with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen losing to seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, driving for the Mercedes team. Subsequent events were won by Verstappen in 2022 and Sergio Perez in 2023.
Held at night, the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix takes place on a 6.175-kilometer track lit by floodlights. It’s outstripped in length only by the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium.
Racers reach average speeds of about 250 kph, sometimes climbing as high as 322 kph, and the circuit includes three consecutive sections in which drivers can use their drag-reduction systems to boost acceleration and overtake competitors.
In addition to evening racing, the Corniche hosts auto competitions during the day, as well as numerous other activities. A recent visitor noted, “It’s about so much more than the night events!” Visitors are presented with a range of food (including Saudi’s famed Al Baik) and mocktail options, as well as an array of vendors and even face painting for kids — and adults.
The site’s main stage, meanwhile, has hosted star-studded musical events after the annual race, with performers including singer Justin Bieber, the Black Eyed Peas and rapper Travis Scott.
